Caring for Your Clients and Yourself in the New Year
Happy New Year!
Each new year comes with promises of change and growth. However much we try, we carry with us into the new year the stories of the past. We can't pick up our phones or open our computers without being bombarded by new stories. So much is happening in our world, country, and communities.
People are worried. People are fearful. We see it in our clients and our friends and families. And if we're honest, maybe in ourselves. Yet, we are called to hold a space for people to experience those feelings and provide a space to learn to care for themselves and others.
Across the top of the whiteboard in my office reads victim, survivor, thriver.
Most of my clients enter the office in victim mode, and many others are already in survivor mode. My goal is always to support clients in victim mode to move to survivor mode, to get relief from the immediate pain, and to be able to breathe and begin to live life again. However, my ultimate goal with every client in my office is to support them in creating a life worth living and to thrive.
The Plucky Therapist will be a space to support other therapists in thriving. I hope this will be a place where you feel cared about and that your cup is filled so that you can take care of yourself and the lives entrusted to you by your clients.
So, as we start this new year, let's commit to treating ourselves well. Each day, we encourage our clients to sleep, eat well, set boundaries, meditate, and care for themselves. Let's take those recommendations we give our clients and use those tools to care for ourselves.
